Round 3 Recap: Novak Soars at VidantaWorld as Early Picks Pay the Price

Andrew Novak's 87-point haul headlines a wild Round 3 at the Mexico Open, while cut casualties among popular picks reshuffle the Major Fantasy Golf standings heading into Sunday.

Sunday 1 November at 07:06

VidantaWorld served up another breezy, big-hitting examination on Moving Day, and the fantasy leaderboard tells its own tale of risk and reward. With Wyndham Clark among the high-profile names heading home early, this was a round that punished the popular picks and rewarded those brave enough to look beyond the obvious.

Novak Leads a Bargain-Laden Charge

Andrew Novak was the standout performer of the day, banking a huge 87 fantasy points as a Birdie Hunter despite sitting in just 8% of teams. On a course playing 7337 yards to a par of 71, with those Paspalum greens rewarding precision as much as power, Novak's round will have been one of the highlights for the lucky few who had him in their XI. Erik van Rooyen was the pick of the Scramblers with 66 points, selected by a healthier 26% of managers, while Max Greyserman's 64 points led the Fairway Finders from a 13% ownership base. Garrett Endicott's 62-point Outsider return, however, will sting those who missed it entirely - he was picked by nobody at all, a reminder that this format continues to reward those willing to dig beyond the obvious names.

The Cut Takes No Prisoners

Fifty-one golfers missed the cut this week, and several of them were sitting pretty in a huge number of fantasy squads. Wyndham Clark, at £12.5M and selected by 53% of teams, was the headline casualty - a brutal blow for those who built around him. David Ford, Lee Hodges and Rasmus Højgaard also departed early, the latter having been picked by nearly a third of the field at 32%. Perhaps most tellingly, 45% of all teams lost their captain to the weekend cut, instantly halving their scoring potential for the remainder of the tournament. On a course that rewards length and wide fairways, it seems even the game's heavy hitters weren't immune to the coastal wind doing its worst.

Shake-Up at the Top of the Table

The overall MFG standings remain tightly bunched after three rounds. Don't Go Left holds the overall lead on 1208 points, with Birtles Baddies close behind on 1161 and Captain Hook breathing down their neck on 1159. Norfolk n chance and Par Wars round out the top five on 1097 and 1073 respectively, and with such fine margins separating the chasing pack, Sunday's final round could easily reshuffle this list from top to bottom.

Looking Ahead to the Final Round

With so many captains lost to the cut and fresh faces like Novak and Endicott proving that value can come from anywhere, Sunday promises to be a fascinating watch for every manager still in contention. The margins at the top of the leaderboard are tight, the course continues to reward length and composure in the wind, and there's still everything to play for as the field heads into the closing stretch at VidantaWorld.
